SUVs - or sport utility vehicles - used to be large cars, primarily built to tackle rough terrain or tow, but that has changed over the years, with many new SUVs focusing on style rather than practicality in terrain-focused areas. As the SUV class progressed, buyers wanted something smaller, more affordable, and better fuel economy, which led to midsize SUVs and eventually small SUVs or crossovers.
